If you are not aware of this topic then we recommend reading the History of Bone Marrow Donation from our official blog.
Mrs.Masilamani is a 26-year-old woman who donated her bone marrow to save an infant suffering from a fatal blood disorder, DATRI claims that she was the first unrelated female donor to donate Bone Marrow. Masilamani is a mother of two children from a village in Coimbatore.
Masilamani is from a remote village called Mudhalipalayam, Coimbatore. She is married to Mr.R.Kavirasan who is a fabricator and they are having two children. Her elder daughter was diagnosed with Thalassemia Major and doctors recommended a Blood Stem Cell Transplant.
Mrs.Masilamain and her Mr.Kavirasan registered with DATRI. At the same time, their HLA report was checked if they were a match. Sadly they did not match. Sometime later she matched for a patient and she became the only hope for the infant who was suffering from a Blood Disorder.
When DATRI approached and informed her that she was only hope for the infant, she was excited. She is from a remote village and her in-laws and her spouse were worried about the process and the side effects of the Bone Marrow Donation. When DATRI arranged for the doctor´s consultation and she came to know there are no major side effects and also her story will encourage many women to come forward for Blood Stem Cell Donation, she got convinced and her spouse and in-laws were very supportive during the whole process.
The number of women who backed out from donations was very high. After Mrs.Masilamani donation her story became key to DATRI to convince women donors to come forward and donate their blood stem cells from the peripheral blood or from bone marrow.
She became talk of the town and featured in Many News Articles, some of them list below:
